SUMMARY

North Western Caribbean Sea:

Tropical Storm (TS) Harvey, the eighth named Storm for the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season has deteriorated into remnants; a large area of disturbed weather over the northwestern Caribbean Sea. Tropical cyclone development is not expected before the system moves inland over the Yucatan peninsula. Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for cyclone development when the system moves over the Bay of Campeche tonight, August 22, 2017 or early Wednesday August 23, 2017, and a tropical depression is likely to form over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday or Thursday. Regardless of development, local heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected to spread westward across Belize and the Yucatan peninsula.

Irma, the 9th named hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season, became a category 5 hurricane in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday September 5, 2017. On Wednesday September 06, 2017, at 8:00 PM AST (0000 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 19.1 North, longitude 66.1 West.

MESSAGE: Powerful category 5 Hurricane Irma continues to impact CDEMA Participating States while Hurricane Jose poses threat to Northern Leeward Islands.

EVENT:

On Thursday September 07, 2017 at 800 PM EDT (0000 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 21.1 North, longitude 71.8 West. Irma is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days with some decrease in forward speed.

MESSAGE: Irma is currently a category 4 hurricane now moving into the Bahamas. Irma made direct landfall over the Turks and Caicos on Thursday September 07, 2017 with heavy rainfall and recorded wind-speeds of 150 mph and greater. Jose remains a dangerous category 4 hurricane as it moves closer to the Northern Leeward Islands.

EVENT:

On Friday September 08, 2017 at 800 PM EDT (0000 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 22.2 North, longitude 77.2 West. Irma is moving towards the west near 12 mph (19 km/h), and a turn toward the northwest is expected by late Saturday. Maximum sustained winds are near 155 mph (250 km/h) with higher gusts. Irma is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km).
