Message: Torrential Rains from a trough system caused flooding, landslides and damage to housing and infrastructure in St Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia . The E.T Joshua Airport in St Vincent and the Grenadines flooded and has been closed until further notice.

St Vincent and the Grenadines
The Situation

As at 1.00pm today, September 6, 2014, the CDEMA CU received a report from the National Emergency Management Organistion St. Vincent and the Grenadines on the impact of torrential rains from a trough system which caused flooding, landslides and damage to housing and infrastructure.

Major Areas Affected
Buccament Bay, Kingstown, Largo Height, Dorsetshire Hill, La Croix, Rose Place, Belair, Belmont/Fair Hall, E. T. Joshua Airport, Arnos Vale, Trigger Ridge.

The Impact

1. Landslides have been reported in several areas including from Fair Hall to Belmont and in Long Wall, Miller Gate, Georgie Gutter, and Belair. These have resulted in blocked or partially blocked roadways at La Croix, Vigie Highway /Belmont, Miller Gate and at at Belair
2. A gabion basket about 20 ft. and 30 feet of rubble wall collapsed
3. E.T Joshua Airport flooded and closed until further notice
4. Three houses damaged and 14 Family members reportedly affected.

Saint Lucia
The Situation

Reports from the Saint Lucia National Emergency Management Office indicated that there was significant rainfall which resulted in landslides and blocked roads. In one case a house was destroyed. There are no reports of fatalities or injuries in Saint Lucia.

NATIONAL ACTIONS:
St. Vincent and the Grenadines

The National Emergency Operations Centre remains activated and will continue to provide updates as necessary. Families who have been displaced by the rains are being placed in emergency shelters.

The Chief Engineer and team are conducting assessments to ascertain the details of impact and the reparation works to be undertaken.

Saint Lucia

The Saint Lucia authorities are working on clearing debris to facilitate accessibility.

REGIONAL ACTIONS:

The Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Coordinating Unit (CU) is in contact the Participating States and stands ready to provide assistance if this should become necessary.

CDEMA will continue to monitor the system and provide updates as is necessary.
