SITUATION OVERVIEW:
Hurricane Melissa formed on October 25, 2025, in the Caribbean Sea. The system initially affected Haiti as a tropical storm as early as October 23, resulting in flooding, landslides and several deaths. The system rapidly intensified into a Category 5 storm on October 27. As at 5:00 p.m. AST, Hurricane Melissa was located near latitude 18.5 North, longitude 77.7 West at 5:00 p.m. AST, or 15 miles (20 km) east of Montego Bay, Jamaica. Maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph (230 km/h) with higher wind gusts. Hurricane Melissa is currently Category 4 tracking slowly north-north eastward at near 8mph (13 km/h). Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles (315 km), with a central pressure of 921 mb (27.2 in).
