Introduction to Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) in the Caribbean (v2016)

This course aims to introduce you to some of the basic concepts of disaster risk management (DRM).

It focuses on DRM in the Caribbean and the approaches that have been taken over the last 25 years to address disaster risk in the region, primarily CDEMA Participating States in the Caribbean region which are primarily small island developing states (SIDS) and low lying coastal states (LLCS. It will also provide general orientation to the CDEMA system.

Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners/you will be able to:

  1. Explain some of the basic concepts and terms in disaster risk management;
  2. Explain Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM);
  3. Identify actions that can be taken at various phases of the disaster management cycle to reduce risks from, and respond effectively to, hazard impacts;
  4. Describe some of the national and regional systems that have been implemented to address disaster risk management issues in the Caribbean;
  5. Identify at least one (1) international approach to addressing disaster risk management, that is relevant to the Caribbean;
  6. Identify useful learning strategies that could enhance the learning experience in this course.

Primary Audience

This course offers an in-depth orientation to DRM in the CDEMA system and is ideal for anyone interested in knowing more about the subject. The staff of National Disaster Management Offices (NDMOs) and members of the wider National Disaster Organisation (NDO) in CDEMA Participating States including those persons operating at the community level will benefit greatly from this course.

Self-paced with up to one (1) year from date of registration to complete.

Assessment

The course comprises six (6) modules delivered through PowerPoint Presentations, text and audio-visual resources and learning games. Learners are assessed by quizzes at the end of the Module and a final course quiz. There are optional discussion forums where learners can share with their peers.

A Course Evaluation survey must be completed prior to receiving a certificate.

Access to the internet and an internet-enabled computer is required for this course. The course is optimized for use with the Chrome browser.
