Introduction to Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) for Caribbean Media

This course introduces Caribbean media and journalism professionals to some of the basic concepts of disaster risk management (DRM), with a focus on Comprehensive Disaster Management in the Caribbean.

It builds awareness of the role of media and journalism at all stages of the disaster cycle- before, during and after a disaster. And it also draws on the experiences of regional media and journalism professionals, who have reported from disaster zones, to better prepare participants for the realities of disaster reporting in the Caribbean.

Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain some of the basic concepts and terms in disaster risk management
  2. Discuss the role of the media in national and regional disaster risk management systems
  3. Share experiences and lessons learned in reporting on emergencies and disasters
  4. Discuss important business continuity and safety considerations for media institutions and personnel before, during and after a disaster
