CDEMA remembers November 2007 Caribbean Sea Earthquake

CDEMA Staff evacuates building during Exercise Shake-UpBridgetown, Barbados, November 27, 2009 (CDEMA) - Staff at the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (formerly CDERA) could be seen taking cover under desks and holding on during an earthquake exercise conducted today (November 27) at the Coordinating Unit in Barbados.

Andria Grosvenor, CDEMA, Programme Manager (Ag.) said, “ Exercise Shake-up” had a twofold purpose, to commemorate the November 2007 Caribbean Earthquake which was a strong reminder of the region’s exposure to the threat of earthquakes and for the Staff of CDEMA to practise safety actions and procedures during an earthquake event.”

“The earthquake of November 29, 2007 was experienced by thousands in twelve of the CDEMA Participating States and has increased the awareness of the hazard in States where many people believed that they were safe from earthquakes. We hope that countries across the region will observe this event annually on the last Friday of November to promote earthquake awareness and safety,” she added

Flash flood situation creates dangerous driving conditions in the Virgin Islands

Tortola, Virgin Islands, November 16, 2009 (DDM) - At 9:50am, the National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) was activated at Level 1. Heavy rains and thunderstorms will continue to affect the Virgin Islands throughout the day and into the evening. The soil is already heavily saturated, and the Territory is under a Flash Flood Warning. A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is very likely to occur in some low lying areas.

NEMO and USAID/OFDA to host consultation to review school safety document for St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, November 10, 2009, NEMO - Officials from the Ministry of Education, NEMO and other stakeholders will meet on Thursday 12th November, 2009 during a consultation to begin the process of developing a policy and plan for a school safety program produced by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA).

Work Programming Workshop for Belize disaster management officials

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 5, 2009, (CDEMA) - The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), through the CDM Harmonized Implementation Programme (CDM HIP): Phase I, and in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) of Belize, will conduct a Country Work Programming Workshop from October 6-9, 2009 at NEMO’s headquarters in Belmopan.
