Bridgetown, Barbados, February 11, 2013 (CDEMA) - During the period February 11-14, the University of Technology, Jamaica/Faculty of the Built Environment (FOBE), in collaboration with CDEMA under its CARICOM/Brazil/FAO Cooperation Programme on Disaster Risk Reduction, will be hosting the Hazard Mitigation and Disaster Management (BUE6023) course. This tertiary level short training course seeks to provide graduate level students from the region with a sound knowledge of contemporary disaster management policy and practice that will enhance their capacity to analyze and manage disaster management issues associated with the built environment.

Paramaribo, Suriname, February 4, 2013 (CDEMA) - Community resilience in Suriname will receive a boost this week through the staging of a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training workshop. This training is a collaborative effort between the Government of Suriname, through the NCCR, and the CDEMA CU. The workshop will be held mainly at the NCCR HQ in Paramaribo, Suriname from February 4 – 8, 2013 with field work being conducted in several parts of the city and its suburbs. The workshop will be attended by individuals from four communities in Suriname.

Bridgetown, Barbados, February 4, 2013 (CDEMA) - The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) is saddened at the passing of Mr. Timothy James on Friday February 1st, 2013 and extends deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Mr. James, a strong advocate of national preparedness for emergencies, was the first Director of the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) in Saint Lucia. He will be remembered for his pioneering work and leadership in disaster management not only on the national stage but in the region as well. As a media practitioner, the CDEMA system benefitted from his tremendous experience and wisdom in our communications policy and programme. His dedication and commitment will not be forgotten.
