Bridgetown, Barbados August 31st, 2019 (CDEMA) – As the Northern Islands of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas brace for the pending impact of Hurricane Dorian, the Agency has once again taken the lead to coordinate the Regional Response Mechanism (RRM) in support of this Participating State.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida, as of 5:00 PM (AST) on August 28, 2019, the centre of Hurricane Dorian was located near latitude 18.8 North, longitude 65.5 West. Dorian is moving toward the northwest near 14 mph (22 km/h). On this track, Dorian should continue to move away from the British Virgin Islands during the next several hours and then move over the open Atlantic well east of the southeastern Bahamas on Thursday and Friday. The estimated minimum central pressure is 997 mb (29.44 inches).

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida, as of 8:00 PM (AST) on August 26, 2019, the center of Tropical Storm Dorian was located near latitude 13.0 North, longitude 59.1 West. Dorian is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 mph (22 km/h). The estimated minimum central pressure 1007 mb.
Maximum sustained winds are 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Dorian could be near hurricane strength when it passes through the northern Windward Islands on Tuesday August 27, 2019.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the centre.

Dorian is moving toward the west near 14 mph (22 km/h). The estimated minimum central pressure 1003 mb. Maximum sustained winds are 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the centre.

Castries, Saint Lucia July 29th, 2019 (CDEMA) – Thirty-four representatives from 28 national agencies, departments of government, the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) sub committees and NGOs, met for the review of the national Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) legislation and the multi-hazard early warning systems regulations in Saint Lucia. The consultation was conducted from 18-28 June 2019 and facilitated by Ms. Vilette Benjamin, a legislative drafter from the Attorney General’s Chambers.

Information Officers from throughout the Public Service met at the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) for the past two days to undergo training in Crisis Communication.
The training was facilitated by Clive A. Murray, Communication and Education Specialist with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and Dr. Livingston A. White, Director of the Caribbean School of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at The University of the West Indies Mona Campus in Jamaica.

Bridgetown, Barbados July 23rd, 2019 (CDEMA) – Twenty-five (25) representatives from across CDEMA’s 18 Participating States are benefiting from a Regional Tsunami Technical Training Workshop being held in Barbados from July 23 to 26, 2019. The workshop is an activity of a project where Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago are direct beneficiaries. However, all 18 member countries of CDEMA stand to benefit from the project’s outcome of an enhanced Regional Tsunami Hazard Plan.
