Bridgetown, Barbados July 13th, 2020 (CDEMA) – The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency Coordinating Unit (CDEMA CU) concluded a two-day workshop last Thursday on training of deployment personnel in operational readiness. As Participating States prepare for the hurricane season while grappling with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the workshop sought to orient attendees from around the region on the updated deployment protocols. The online training sessions proved useful in enhancing the capacity of regional personnel, with over 120 persons in attendance.

Bridgetown, Barbados, July 6th, 2020 (CDEMA) - The highest decision-making body of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), which forms The Council of Ministers, recognised the leadership role of Agency and by extension the Participating States in the management of the COVID-19 event during the 10th Annual Ordinary Session, which was held via ZOOM over two days, June 26 and July 3, 2020. The Council noted the efforts being undertaken by the Agency to coordinate response and relief to the region amidst the COVID-19 pandemic specifically in facilitating the relief supplies hub for the region.

In the week to Thursday July 2, 2020 among the 20 CARICOM members and associate members, there have been 902 new confirmed cases (compared to 975 last week, and 1080 two weeks ago) and 20 new confirmed deaths (compared to 14 last week, and 28 two weeks ago). Most of these new cases were identified in Haiti (611).The remaining 291 cases were reported in 8 countries: Antigua and Barbuda (1 case); Belize (5 cases); Cayman Islands (5 cases); Guyana (39 cases); Jamaica (29 cases); Suriname (178
cases); Trinidad and Tobago (7 cases); Turks and Caicos Islands (27 cases) In the past 24 hours there have been 93 new confirmed cases and 3 new confirmed deaths. With 6040 confirmed cases, 611 of these in the past week, Haiti remains the outbreak hotspot among the CARICOM members. The continuing outbreak in neighbouring Dominican Republic (33387 cases, 4756 in the past week, 754 deaths) compounds the situation in Haiti. In response to the new cluster of cases on Providenciales, Turks and Caicos has re-imposed localised restrictions.

- In the week to Thu June 25th, among the 20 CARICOM members and associate members, there have been 975 new confirmed cases (down from 1,080 last week, and 1,269 two weeks ago) and 14 new confirmed deaths (down from 28 new deaths last week, and up compared to 10 new deaths 2 weeks ago). Most of these new cases were identified in Haiti (741). The remaining 234 cases were reported in Suriname (96), Jamaica (52), Antigua and Barbuda (39), Guyana (38), Cayman Islands (3), Bermuda (2), Belize (1), and Turks and Caicos Islands (3). In the past 24 hours there have been 195 new confirmed cases and 4 new confirmed deaths. With 5429 confirmed cases, 741 of these in the past week, Haiti remains the outbreak hotspot among the CARICOM members. The continuing outbreak in neighbouring Dominican Republic (28,631 cases, 4,526 in the past week, 691 deaths) compounds the situation in Haiti. Nine (9) of the 20 CARICOM countries have identified new cases in the past week.

CARICOM has launched the second round of the Caribbean COVID-19 Food Security and Livelihoods Survey. Following the April 2020 survey that highlighted disruption to livelihoods and impacts on food security in the initial stages of the COVID-19 response, this round aims to capture the current state of affairs and analyse how livelihoods, food security and markets have shifted over the past few months. The survey is open to all CARICOM Member States and Associate Members, as well as Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten between 22 June – 6 July 2020. It takes a few minutes to complete and is available in English, French and Spanish.
This survey is conducted by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on behalf of CARICOM, in cooperation with CDEMA and FAO, and made possible by the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Operations (ECHO) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA).
