Surface trough dumps heavy rains which resulted in severe flooding and landslides in Saint Lucia.
Event:
A surface trough began affecting Saint Lucia from about 9:00 p.m. on November 17, 2010, producing heavy rains throughout the island. This has resulted in several landslides and widespread flooding.
Prognosis:
The forecast over the next 24 hours is for more rain.
Impact:
The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has provided an overview of the impact from the system.
- One 12 year old boy drowned when swept area by floods.
- Flooding was observed in several areas including Castries, Bexon, and Coolie Town.
- Several landslides have been reported island-wide.
National Actions:
- The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) which was winding down its activation since the passing of Hurricane Tomas has been fully activated.
- The Ministry of Education closed schools today - Fifth formers returned to school today and several private schools had started operating.
- Shelters remain open throughout the island.
- NEMO has recommended that businesses close for the rest of the day.
