THE SITUATION:

Hurricane Beryl, the second (2nd) named storm of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season, formed over the central Atlantic Ocean on July 05, 2018. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, as at 11:00 am (AST) July 06, 2018, Beryl, a category 1 hurricane, was located at 10.7N and 46.5W about 1045 miles (1685km) ESE of the Lesser Antilles with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 994 mb. The present movement of Beryl is west or 275o at 15 mph (24 km/h).

Message: Kick ‘em Jenny Submarine Volcano Alert Level raised from Yellow to Orange

1. THE EVENT:

During the period 11th-12th March, The UWI Seismic Research Centre (SRC) recorded a substantial increase in earthquake activity associated with the Kick-‘em-Jenny (KeJ) submarine volcano, which is located 8km north of Grenada (12.18o N, 61.38 oW). The volcano is about 1300 m high and 300 m wide at its summit, and is currently estimated to be about 200 m below the surface of the sea. The most recent eruption of KeJ occurred in April 2017 (UWI-SRC, 2018). At 2:00 p.m. 12th March, 2018, the Grenada National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA), with the scientific support of the SRC, raised the level of alert at the volcano from Yellow to ORANGE.

MESSAGE: Hurricane Maria becomes an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane as it directly impacts Dominica during the next few hours.

Hurricane Maria, the 15th named storm of the 2017 Tropical Atlantic Hurricane Season, is now a dangerous category 4 hurricane. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, as at 5:00 pm (AST), Monday September 18, 2017, Maria was located 15.1N and 60.7W, about 45 miles east-southeast of Dominica and 35 miles northeast of Martinique.

MESSAGE: Tropical Storm Maria forms over in the Atlantic. Hurricane Watches issued for Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat. Tropical Storm Warnings issued for Saint Lucia, Dominica, Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

THE SITUATION:

Tropical Storm Maria, the eleventh (11th) named storm of the 2017 Tropical Atlantic Hurricane Season, has formed in the central Atlantic Ocean. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, as at 5:00 pm (AST), Saturday September 16, 2017, Tropical Storm (TS) Maria was located 12.3N and 52.6W, about 620 miles ESE of the Lesser Antilles.

MESSAGE: Potentially Catastrophic Category 5 Hurricane Nearing the Northern Leeward Islands while Tropical Storm Jose forms over the open Atlantic

THE SITUATION:

The latest advisory issued by the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami, Florida at 5:00 PM AST (2100 UTC), reports that Irma remains an extremely dangerous category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 185 mph (295 km/h) with higher gusts. The distinct eye of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 17.1 North, longitude 59.8 West. Irma is moving toward the west near 15 mph (24 km/h).
