Sabrina Atkinson

Northern Caribbean University, Jamaica Caribbean Girls Hack Alumni 2019

Sabrina Atkinson is a third-year student at the Northern Caribbean University pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. She is committed to community engagement from her secondary school studies, where she was active in various clubs and societies, whilst maintaining her position on the Principal’s honor roll.

Sabrina was afforded the opportunity to be a part of the NCU team continues its stellar track record of innovation in technology at the Caribbean Girls Hack 2019 Hackathon, organized by SheLeadsIT. The NCU Team was awarded Second Place Winner for their solution “DERCOO” geared towards addressing the effects of climate change and its reduction. Sabrina has always been passionate about the environment and sustainable development and this competition provided the realization that technology is such a huge factor in the education of people on the effects of climate change and comprehensive disaster management.

Sabrina is passionate about debating, as she is an enthusiastic member of the Northern Caribbean University Debate team where she has received various awards including the Top Ten Best Speaker in the Jamaican Association for Debating and Empowerment Academy and Open 2018.  NCU competitions and accolades include First Place in the Northern Caribbean University 2019 Invitational Debate Series, First Place at the NIA-JADE National Collegiate Debating Championship 2017, and competing at the Global Health Debates (GHD, Philippines). She is a firm believer that debating is an ideal avenue to develop life skills and is additionally a great medium for children and youth to learn how to express themselves while valuing other’s opinions.

She has represented her university in several local and international debating tournaments in Europe and North America including the Worlds Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) in the Netherlands (2017) and Mexico (2018). In March 2019, she was awarded the 10th Best Speaker in the Pan American region by the Pan American Universities Debating Championship held in Panama. Her zeal for outreach has led her to volunteer with the Debate Mate Programme, where she teaches debating to at-risk youths in volatile communities in Jamaica and advocates for innovation and youth involvement in driving growth and development. Roshelle’s career vision is the contribute to greater levels of sustainable development through improving the IT infrastructure and tech ecosystems of Jamaica and the Caribbean.
