CDEMA Information Note #3 - Tropical Storm Beryl as of 2:00PM (AST) on July 08, 2018

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida, as of 2:00 PM (AST) on July 08, 2018, Beryl continues to move WNW towards the Lesser Antilles with no change in strength. Beryl or its remnants is forecast to approach the Lesser Antilles this evening, Sunday July 08, and cross the island chain tonight.

Gradual weakening is anticipated over the next 24 hours, and Beryl is forecast to degenerate into a trough or low pressure system by this evening as it moves across the Lesser Antilles and into the eastern Caribbean Sea by Monday July 09.

CDEMA Information Note #2 - Tropical Storm Beryl as of 8:00PM (AST) on July 07, 2018

SYNOPSIS OF TROPICAL STORM BERYL:

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida, as of 11:00 AM (AST) on July 07, 2018, Beryl, the second (2nd) named storm of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season, was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm. As of 8:00 PM the center of Beryl, was located at 12.9N and 53.5W about 550 miles (885km) ESE of the Lesser Antilles with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 1003 mb. The present movement of Beryl is West-North-West or 295o at 17 mph (28 km/h).

CDEMA Information Note #1 - Hurricane Beryl as of 11:00am (AST) on July 06, 2018

MESSAGE: Hurricane Beryl forms over the far Eastern Atlantic and progresses west towards the Caribbean.

THE SITUATION:

Hurricane Beryl, the second (2nd) named storm of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season, formed over the central Atlantic Ocean on July 05, 2018. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, as at 11:00 am (AST) July 06, 2018, Beryl, a category 1 hurricane, was located at 10.7N and 46.5W about 1045 miles (1685km) ESE of the Lesser Antilles with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 994 mb. The present movement of Beryl is west or 275o at 15 mph (24 km/h).

China-funded roofing project on Barbuda meets target of 250 homes

St. John, Antigua, June 28th, 2018 (NODS) - The two-million US dollar China-funded roofing restoration project on Barbuda has met and exceeded the target of 250 homes, just days before the June 30 deadline.

The initiative, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the government of Antigua and Barbuda, focused on repairing the roofs of houses that received minor and major damage, or those categorized between levels one and three.

Bridgetown, Barbados, June 28th, 2018 (CDEMA) – The Sixth (6th) Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction was held in Cartagena, Colombia from the 20th-22nd June 2018 and brought together representatives from governments, inter-governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, parliamentarians and leaders. This year’s theme “Towards a Less Vulnerable Region with more Resilient Communities” was said by Ronald Jackson, Executive Director to CDEMA, to have come at a critical juncture in the CARICOM’s efforts to implement the Sendai Framework Priorities through the Comprehensive Disaster Management Strategy.
