Virgin Islands Host Second Meeting of CDEMA Technical Advisory Committee

The TAC, one of CDEMA’s decision making organs, will provide critical stewardship necessary for moving forward in core areas identified by the CDEMA Coordinating Unit.  Matters up for deliberations are: 
(1) The Draft National Comprehensive Disaster Management Policy,
(2) The Model Disaster Management  Legislation,
(3) A strategy for adaptation of both Disaster Management  Legislation and CDM Policy  by CDEMA Participating States,
(4) A Comprehensive Disaster Management Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting System, and
(5)  A proposal for advancing Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) beyond 2012.

The meeting will devote attention to the status of implementation of the 2007-2012 regional Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) Programme and will include direction from the committee on the CDEMA work plans for the coming year.

The TAC will be chaired by Mr. Elton Georges, CMG, OBE, Deputy Governor (Retired) and current Complaints Commissioner in the Virgin Islands. Mr. Georges was responsible for direct supervision of the Territory’s disaster management programme from 1983 to 2008.

The state of national disaster management readiness and the national disaster plans review are also to be discussed.  The CARICOM Community Climate Change Centre is also expected to brief the Committee on the draft Regional Climate Change Implementation plan which emphasizes the convergence between climate change adaptation and disaster management.

The Meeting is being hosted by the Government of the Virgin Islands through the Premier’s Office and the Department of Disaster Management in collaboration with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

A highlight of the TAC Meeting is the inaugural CDEMA Service Award Presentation. The event will honor and recognize staff who have served in National Disaster Offices and the CDEMA Coordinating Unit

The Presentation will take place during the opening ceremony of the TAC meeting on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Long Beach Bay Resort, Tortola, Virgin Islands.

The Opening Ceremony starts at 7.00pm and will be webcast live on www.cbnbvi.com, www.cdema.org and www.bviddm.com.

The Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) is the technical and programmatic advisory arm of the CDEMA. This organ of CDEMA comprises of the National Disaster Coordinators of the CDEMA 18 Participating States and representatives of specialized regional organizations, such as those engaged in technological, meteorological and seismological fields whose programmes are directly related to the regional disaster management agenda.

There are four (4) Sub-Committees of TAC :

  • Information Communications Systems Advisory Sub-Committee (ICSAC);
  • Plans Development and Review Sub-Committee;
  • Climate Change, Disaster Risk Reduction and Environment Sub-Committee; and
  • Work Programme Development and Review Sub-Committee
