Caribbean countries renew hurricane and earthquake coverage

Grand Cayman, 1 July 2010 – All sixteen members of the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) have renewed their policies for hurricane and earthquake coverage for the 2010/11 year beginning on 1 June – the start of the hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast estimates an 85% chance of an above normal hurricane season this year. This could have serious implications for Caribbean islands and potential losses, especially given the poor economic conditions still affecting the region. This therefore makes the need for CCRIF even stronger.

NEMO & USAID OFDA to host Emergency Operation Centre Training Workshop

Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, November 10, 2009, (NEMO) - The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) will conduct a workshop on the establishment, operations, management and administration of Emergency Operation Centres, this Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd July, 2010.  This training workshop is a collaborative initiative between NEMO and the US Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance under the Latin American and Caribbean (OFDA/LAC) Programme.

Situation Report 1 - Tropical Storm Alex impacts Belize

Message:
Tropical Storm Alex causes heavy rains throughout Belize with pockets of gusty winds exceeding 40 mph. Initial economic losses estimated at BZ$2.5m.

Event:
The first Tropical Cyclone of the 2010 Atlantic Basin Hurricane, Tropical Storm Alex made landfall along the coast of Belize on Saturday June 26, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. TS Alex moved WNW at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, storm surge of three to five (3-5) feet and rainfall of four to eight (4-8) inches were forecasted as the System moved inland.  The ‘All Clear’ for the system was issued at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, 27 June 2010.

Disaster Management & Mitigation Project Launched in Nevis

Organisation of American States, (OAS) through its Special Multilateral Fund for the Inter-American Council for Integral development (FEMCIDI), has proudly sponsored the Disaster Management and Mitigation Project for the island of Nevis. The timely project which was launched on Wednesday,June 9th at the Llewellyn Newton Disaster Management Facility at Long Point comes at a time when Nevis has just entered the beginning of the 2010 hurricane season.
