CDEMA Situation Report #1 - Earthquake felt across CDEMA Participating States as of 8:00pm on August 21st, 2018

SITUATION

According to the University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre (SRC) the 6.8 magnitude earthquake occurred at 5:31PM (Local Time) at a depth of 88km. The earthquake was located Latitude 10.47N and Longitude 62.75W at 57km SE of Carupano, Venezuela. The Earthquake was felt strongly in Trinidad and Tobago in the cities of Port of Spain and San Fernando. The following CDEMA Participating States also reported tremors around the same time: Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname.

Consultancy Services needed to assess Emergency Protocols & Procedures in the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency Participating States

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) has received financing from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in an amount equivalent to one hundred and twenty-seven thousand, six hundred and forty-four euros (EUR127,644) towards the cost of the Review of Emergency Response Procedures in the CDEMA Participating States Project and intends to apply a portion of the proceeds of this financing to eligible payments under a contract for which this invitation is issued.

Payments by CDB will be made only at the request of CDEMA and upon approval by CDB and will be subject in all respects to the terms and conditions of the Financing Agreement. The Financing Agreement prohibits withdrawal from the financing account for the purpose of any payment to persons or entities, or for any import of goods, if such payment or import, to the knowledge of CDB, is prohibited by a decision of the United Nations Security Council taken under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations. No party other than CDEMA shall derive any rights from the Financing Agreement or have any claim to the proceeds of the Financing.

2nd Batch of the CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit being trained in Barbados

Bridgetown, Barbados July 16th, 2018 – The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency Coordinating Unit (CDEMA CU) and the Regional Security System Headquarters (RSS HQ) convened a second training workshop of the CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit (CDRU) to serve the region during the period August 2018 to July 2019. The training workshop is taking place from July 16 – 20, 2018, at the Frank Walcott Labour College in St. Phillip, Barbados with funding support from the United States Government through the US Southern Command.

Early Warning System Project launched in Saint Lucia

In efforts to enhance the early warning systems in Saint Lucia, the project entitled ‘Strengthen Integrated Early Warning Systems (EWS) in the Caribbean’ was launched in on May 22, 2018 during the Opening Session of the ‘Validation Workshop for Saint Lucia’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS) Gap Analysis and the Development of the National Roadmap’.
